The Lead, Legal Employment and Litigation for Japan is responsible for heading up the Employment law
function for API and corporate entities in Japan by providing practical, timely, strategic, and high quality legal advice and counsel to a broad spectrum of clients and, in collaboration with the Legal Lead of
Employment for the Other Commercial Divisions, across the entirety of Astellas’ global enterprise. This is a highly strategic position and is accountable for managing the employment risks in Japan as well as supporting the Other Commercial Divisions. This position also provides legal support for commercial litigations, claims and internal compliance investigations arising in Japan. This position must address a myriad of legal issues in a complex
and fast-evolving legal environment, and must do so in a manner that minimizes exposure and reputational
damage in an area of high potential liability and risk to the Company’s operations and success.

This position shall have the following responsibilities:
• Serving as a strategic legal partner to global and local Human Resources (“HR”) and business leaders and their teams by leading and overseeing the full range of employment law support, advice, and counseling in regard to matters affecting the employees in Japan, including providing timely, proactive, strategic, best-in-class legal advice and support, taking into account the global objectives of the organization and the unique and varying global legal requirements in a risk-balanced manner in order to effectively minimize and mitigate risk. Such support includes day-to-day advice and counsel throughout the entire employment life cycle of employees in Japan, including hiring, performance management, discipline, discharge, pay practices, workplace accommodations, and leaves of absence, as well as business reorganizations, corporate restructurings, diversity & inclusion, and other workforce initiatives.
• Leading, overseeing, and managing the Company’s response to all employment and commercial litigation, administrative charges, and pending/threatened claims arising in Japan, and providing support on such matters arising in the Other Commercial Divisions as may be requested by the Head of Litigation, Investigations, Employment & Governance (LIEG). Such support includes actively developing, directing, and implementing strategic litigation decisions; managing outside counsel; recommending appropriate courses of action to HR and senior business leaders; reviewing and revising litigation/administrative filings and discovery responses; participating in mediations; and negotiating resolutions.
• Leading, managing and overseeing internal employment investigations arising in Japan with minimal supervision and recommending appropriate Company response; supporting internal employment investigations arising in the Other Commercial Divisions, as necessary; directing, overseeing, and providing legal support to HR-led employment investigations in the Divisions; and coordinating/collaborating with global HR, Ethics & Compliance, and the LIEG Team.
• Proactively assessing in a risk-balanced approach those employment and business risks in Japan and developing risk mitigation strategies; partnering closely with the Legal Employment Lead of the Other Commercial Divisions on cross-Divisional matters and global employment and business risks affecting entire the Astellas enterprise; identifying and overseeing the development and implementation of business process improvements to minimize employment risk.
• Identifying development/training opportunities and developing/delivering internal training to HR and business client groups in Japan on relevant employment issues; partnering closely with the Legal Employment Lead of the Other Commercial Divisions to develop and deliver internal training to cross-border managers; overseeing and providing senior management and business clients updates on employment and benefits law developments affecting the pharmaceutical industry, coordinating with the Legal Employment Lead of the Other Commercial Divisions and other leaders in the Legal function, as may be appropriate.
• Collaborating with and providing comprehensive employment law support and advice to other members of Legal in connection with due diligence, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other complex business transactions within or involving Japan.
• Leading, overseeing, and managing the drafting and/or review as well as the completion of all HR and employee benefits documents, including offer letters, employment agreements, Company policies, performance action plans, severance agreements; and benefits/compensation plan documents.
• Leading, overseeing and managing all employment-related matters for re-organizations or other organizational changes impacting Japan.
• Retaining, supervising and directing outside counsel effectively, and efficiently managing legal expenses consistent with global budget for Legal Employment matters.
• Coordinating closely with global Ethics & Compliance colleagues.
• Leading other projects as may be requested by the Head of LIEG, the Head of Legal, or the General Counsel.

•At least 10 years’ experience working in a law firm or pharmaceutical legal department, with deep experience in employment law advice, counsel, and litigation.
•Sophisticated understanding of the Japanese employment laws and litigation processes/procedures.
•Solid understanding of e-discovery and document preservation obligations in a global organization.
•Strong experience and knowledge of best practices relating to employment matters in Japan.
•Strong ability to grasp legal issues quickly, exhibit strong analytical problem solving and decision-making skills, exercise sound judgment, and provide practical and constructive legal advice in a time-sensitive, dynamic, and fast-paced complex global environment.
•Strong negotiation and communication skills (both oral and written). Ability to communicate legal issues in a clear and understandable manner. Inspires trust and confidence through effective communication and interpersonal skills.
•Strong work ethic and ability to manage large workload, multi-task, focus on critical priorities, and otherwise effectively meet client needs. Ability to produce high quality work under deadline pressures.
•Team player and able to build relationships, both internally and externally, on a global scale.
•Strong organization and teamwork skills. Detail-oriented, self-motivated and able to motivate others.
•A strong commitment to integrity and professionalism and demonstrated passion for excellence.
